Dubai, United Arab Emirates

From a small, quaint fishing village with empty stretches of golden sand and once popular as a pearl diving spot, Dubai has emerged as one of the twenty-first century’s most dynamic, fast-moving and fascinating global cities that has commanded the world's attention time and time again. Its headline-grabbing mega-projects have on a number of occasions rewritten record books as evidenced by stunning developments such as the impressive Palm and World Islands both of which are visible from space, and the cloud-piercing Burj Khalifa, which can be seen from up to a remarkable 95 kilometers away (on haze-free days that is). And while this emirate may be known as an architect's playground, there is more intrigue beyond this glitz and glamour with culture and heritage also deeply rooted into the social fabric. This can be experienced when meandering its labyrinth-like souq precincts, when hopping on traditional abra boats and crossing the saltwater creek which for centuries has been frequented by merchant ships or, more remotely, when accessing the vast, evocative desert which saw nomadic camel-riding tribes cross this untamed land.
